Best AI for studying (free options that actually help)

NotebookLM for your own notes and slides. ChatGPT’s Study mode when you need something explained. Both are free.

The short answer

Use NotebookLM for anything you’ve been given: lecture slides, PDFs, readings. It answers from your files and makes quizzes and study guides from them. When you just don’t get a topic, use ChatGPT’s Study mode, which asks you questions instead of handing over answers. Both work on free plans, so don’t pay until you hit a limit.

Why NotebookLM comes first

Most of studying is getting through material someone already gave you. NotebookLM is built for exactly that. You upload your slides, readings and notes, and it answers questions using only those files, with links back to the page it got each answer from. It can also make a study guide, flashcards, a practice quiz or an audio summary you can listen to on the bus.

That “only your files” part matters. A general chatbot will happily fill gaps with things your course never said. In a r/studytips thread on the AI tools students actually use, NotebookLM was the first pick for slides and PDFs, and people said the free tiers were plenty. On X, one engineering student wrote that it finally clicked while revising for a physics exam, because the answers came from their own lecture notes.

ChatGPT Study mode, for when you’re stuck

When the problem is that you don’t understand something, you need a tutor more than a search box. ChatGPT’s Study mode, which OpenAI lists on its Free, Go and Plus plans, walks you through a topic with questions and hints instead of dumping the answer. A Reddit thread comparing the two landed where we did: Study mode is the tutor, NotebookLM is for your own material.

Claude is a fine alternative if you prefer its writing style, and it’s good at giving feedback on an essay draft. Ask for feedback, not a rewrite.

Don’t let it do the remembering for you

AI makes it easy to feel like you studied when you only read a summary. Use it to quiz you, not to replace the quiz. Many students in the threads above pair AI with a plain flashcard app like Anki for the memorizing part. And check your school’s rules: some courses ban AI on assignments even if it’s fine for revision.
