Best AI for writing a resume (without sounding like a robot)
Draft it with Claude or ChatGPT. Polish it with Grammarly. Then rewrite the bits that don’t sound like you.
The short answer
Use Claude or ChatGPT, both free, to turn your messy job history into clean bullet points that match the job ad. Run the result through Grammarly’s free plan to catch typos. Skip the paid “AI resume builder” sites until you’ve tried this; most of them wrap the same kind of AI in a template.
The trick most people miss
Don’t ask an AI to “write my resume.” You’ll get a generic page that sounds like every other applicant’s. Paste in three things instead: your old resume (or a rough list of jobs and what you did), the job ad you’re applying for, and one line about what you want to be known for. Then ask it to rewrite your bullet points so they match what the ad asks for, using only facts you gave it.
That last part matters. AI will happily invent a “30% increase in sales” you never had. Read every line and cut anything that isn’t true. A recruiter asking about a made-up number is a bad interview.
Claude or ChatGPT? Either is fine
Claude tends to write in a calmer, more natural tone, which helps a resume and especially a cover letter. Its free plan can also create files, so you can ask for a Word document at the end. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month paid yearly, but you shouldn’t need it for a resume.
ChatGPT is just as good at the job and its free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats, with tighter limits on file uploads. If you already use it, stay there. Our honest take: the gap between the two for a one-page resume is small. Your input matters more than the tool.
Grammarly for the last 10%
Once the words are right, paste them into Grammarly. The free plan catches spelling and grammar slips and shows your tone, and it includes 100 AI prompts a month. Pro is $12 a month and adds full-sentence rewrites and tone changes. For a single resume, free is plenty.
QuillBot is the other option if a sentence feels clunky and you want a few ways to rephrase it. Just don’t run your whole resume through a paraphraser; it can sand off the specific details that get you hired.
Before you hit send
Read it out loud. If a line sounds like a LinkedIn ad (“results-driven self-starter”), cut it. Keep it to one page unless you have well over ten years of relevant work. And save a plain version too: many company job sites scan resumes with software, and simple layouts read best.
