Best free AI image generator right now

Gemini or ChatGPT for most pictures. Ideogram when the image needs readable text. Skip Midjourney if you want free; it has no free plan.

The short answer

Use Gemini first. It’s free, fast and good at realistic images, with daily limits. ChatGPT is just as good at following a long, specific prompt, but its free plan makes fewer images. If you need words in the picture, like a poster or a sign, use Ideogram. Midjourney still makes beautiful art, but it starts at $10 a month and has no free plan.

Gemini and ChatGPT cover most people

If you just want a picture for a birthday card, a slide or a blog post, you don’t need a special app. Gemini makes images on its free plan, and in an r/generativeAI thread on the most realistic generator, Google’s Nano Banana model was the common answer, with the note that the free version has daily limits.

ChatGPT is the other strong free option. The same thread credited it with handling complicated prompts well, and one designer on X put it bluntly: “Chatgpt is probably the best free image generator.” Its free plan just runs out sooner.

Ideogram when the words matter

Most generators still mangle text. Ideogram is the one people recommend for posters, flyers and anything with lettering, and it came up again in an r/generativeAI thread about free logo generators. Its free plan gives you some credits each week.

The fine print on “free”

On Ideogram and Leonardo, free images are public by default, and Leonardo’s pricing page says it holds rights to free-plan images. Don’t use free plans for anything private or for a client. Benchmark Lab’s free-generator test flags the same thing. Midjourney isn’t free at all; its plans page starts at Basic.

Quick questions

Are free AI images private?

Which free AI image generator is best for text?

Ideogram. It is the one most people recommend for posters, flyers and logos with readable words.
