Best free AI photo editor (and when not to use a chatbot)

Gemini is the best free way to edit a photo by just describing the change. For small fixes on faces, use a tool that edits only the part you select.

The short answer

For free, start with Gemini: upload a photo, say what to change, done. Image editing is on Google’s free plan. The catch is that chatbots redraw the whole picture, so faces and small details can drift. If you’re fixing one spot, like removing a person or swapping a sky, use a select-and-fill tool such as Adobe Firefly or Canva instead.

Why Gemini is our free pick

Gemini’s image model, the one people call Nano Banana, lets you upload a photo and type “make the sky stormy” or “put me in a navy suit.” Google lists image generation and editing on its free plan, with daily limits. Beebom’s roundup rates it the best free option right now.

X is full of excitement about it. A widely shared post claimed it turns three hours of editing into 30 seconds. That’s true for big, playful edits. It’s less true for the careful kind.

The catch: chatbots redraw the whole photo

When you ask Gemini or ChatGPT to edit a picture, they generate a new image based on yours. In an r/generativeAI thread on the best AI photo editor, the main complaint was that faces drift a bit with every edit, and the usual advice was to use a masked edit, where you paint over just the part you want changed. Photoshop and Adobe Firefly call this Generative Fill.

Our rule: family photos and anything with a face you care about go to a select-and-fill tool. Memes, mockups and “what would this room look like in green” go to a chatbot.

Canva for everyday cleanups

If you mostly make social posts, Canva is the least fiddly. Its background remover and magic eraser are a click each, and the result goes straight into a design. The Zapier blog’s list of free photo editors makes the same point: for most people, a simple editor with a few AI buttons beats a pro tool.

Quick questions

Can I edit photos with AI for free?

Yes. Gemini’s free plan includes image editing, and Adobe Firefly and Canva both have free plans with AI tools.

Why does my face look different after an AI edit?

Chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT regenerate the whole image, so small details shift. Use a tool that edits only the area you select, like Firefly’s Generative Fill.

Is there an AI photo editor with no sign-up?

Not among the tools we recommend. Gemini, ChatGPT, Firefly and Canva all ask you to sign in, mostly to track free limits.
