ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for everyday use

All three are free to start. ChatGPT does the most. Claude writes the best. Gemini makes sense if your life runs on Google.

The short answer

Pick ChatGPT if you want one app that does a bit of everything: chat, pictures, voice, research. Pick Claude if you mostly write. Pick Gemini if you live in Gmail and Google Drive, because its paid plan also gives you more storage. Try the free versions for a week before paying for anything.

The short version

Asking which is “best” is like asking which car is best. It depends on the drive. All three answer questions, write emails, explain things and read photos or files you upload. All three have free plans with limits. The differences show up in what you do every day.

ChatGPT: the all-rounder

ChatGPT’s free plan now gives you unlimited everyday text chats, plus limited image making, voice chats and deep research (where it reads lots of websites and writes you a report). There’s a cheaper Go plan between Free and Plus. It may show ads. If you only install one AI app, this is it.

Claude: the writer

Claude is the one we’d hand a cover letter, a tricky email to a landlord, or a newsletter draft. Its writing sounds less like a robot. The free plan includes web search, memory and voice mode. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for the year. The catch: every plan has usage limits that reset every five hours, and heavy users notice.

Gemini: the Google one

Gemini is free with a Google account and can make and edit images and run deep research. Its paid plans are where it gets interesting for regular people: Google AI Pro puts Gemini inside Gmail and Docs and adds 5 TB of storage for Gmail, Drive and Photos. If you already pay Google for storage, that can be the cheapest way to get a top AI.

What we’d do

Use ChatGPT free for a week. If most of what you asked for was writing, try Claude. If you kept wishing it could see your email, try Gemini. Only pay for the one you actually kept opening.
