Best AI PDF summarizer (and when a chatbot is enough)

NotebookLM for free multi-file work with citations. ChatPDF for one quick PDF in the browser. Claude when a single dense document has to be read carefully.

The short answer

Start with NotebookLM. It is free on Google’s Standard plan, answers only from the files you upload, and shows where each claim came from. Use ChatPDF when you want to drop one PDF in and ask a few questions without a Google login (free: 2 documents a day; Plus about $19.99 a month). For one long, dense file where writing quality matters, Claude’s free plan or Pro at about $20 a month is stronger than a thin “PDF chat” wrapper.

Why NotebookLM is the free default

NotebookLM (also shown in Google’s apps as Gemini Notebook) is built for this job: upload PDFs, notes, links and slides, then ask questions that stay grounded in those sources with clickable citations. The Standard plan is free; Google AI Plus ($4.99) and Pro ($19.99) raise chat and audio limits if you hit caps in a busy week.

The non-obvious part is how people underuse it. Posts on X still note that most users treat NotebookLM like a single-PDF summarizer. That works, but the product is stronger as a multi-source notebook: dump a syllabus, three papers and your notes in one place, then ask for a study guide. On r/notebooklm, people pick it specifically when they need answers that do not invent outside facts.

ChatPDF for a single file, no Google login

ChatPDF is the no-friction path: drop a PDF (or Word, PowerPoint or text file), ask questions, jump to the cited page. Free allows 2 documents a day. Plus is about $19.99 a month in independent checks (ChatPDF’s homepage lists Plus without a public dollar figure). The company says it routes between GPT-4o-class models behind the scenes.

That Plus price is the catch. For one occasional paper, Free is fine. For a real research pile, free NotebookLM usually wins. Threads on r/AIToolTracker call ChatPDF fast on a single paper and weaker when you need cross-section context; r/research keeps asking whether dedicated PDF chat apps are worth paying for at all.

Claude when one document has to be read hard

Specialist PDF apps are not always better than a strong chatbot with a big context window. Claude is the one we reach for on a long contract, thesis chapter or technical report where the prose of the summary matters. Free works for lighter files; Pro is about $20 a month when you hit limits. You do not get NotebookLM’s notebook-and-citation chrome, so keep the original PDF open and verify quotes.

ChatGPT can do the same upload-and-ask loop if you already pay for it. It is more willing to wander outside the file. Prefer NotebookLM when “only from these sources” is the rule.

What we’d start with

Stack of class readings or work PDFs: NotebookLM. One PDF on a shared computer with no Google login: ChatPDF Free. One brutal 80-page document: Claude. Whatever you pick, open the cited page before you act on a number or a clause.
